How to care for woolen clothes?

EN: Wool is the perfect natural fiber. Absorbs up to 30% of its weight without feeling damp or cold. Cotton, which is another great natural fiber, absorbs up only about 15% of its weight and once wet, it doesn’t keep the body heat and stretches. Which means that during winter times, woolen clothes are perfect, because they keep the body warm even if the wool gets wet. If woolen clothes are cared for the right way, you can enjoy them for more years than clothes made of other fibers.

Because wool allows the body to keep warm, this fiber is a top choice for baby clothes. When we sweat, it’s important that the clothes we wear allow the body to dry off without feeling damp and cold. Of course there are also artificial fibers – man made fibers – which imitate the proprieties of wool, these are great choices for people with allergies to wool.

The fashion industry is full of woolen products. And the fiber industry is wool centered, because let’s face it: wool is amazing! There are so many types available, that it’s quite difficult to chose one over the other. One of the most sought after type of wool is merino (in Romania this is the latest craze in fashion and crafts, everybody’s selling or buying merino, like it’s fiber gold).

Merino yarn comes from Australia, from Merino sheep with curly and very soft hair. This type of wool is soft and has the same proprieties of wool from non-Merino sheeps, but it is softer and doesn’t tickle. Perhaps you too have noticed the wide variety of baby clothes made of merino, from trousers to diapers, hats and many more. One of the things I read about recently was baby diaper covers. If the baby wets himself during the night, the merino diaper cover will keep the heat in and the baby will not risk catching a cold. Plus, a merino diaper cover will not irritate the baby’s soft skin, because when wet, this wool doesn’t become scratchy or itchy, but remains soft.

How to wash woolen clothes?

Another advantage of wool is that dirt cannot really get deep in the fiber. Of course, there are exceptions, but generally, this fiber is quite easy to care for. When cleaning a woolen costume, make sure you use a soft brush to dust dirt off or, if the costume is too dirty or has spots hard to clean, take it to a professional cleaning service. It’s much easier, as a professional cleaner has tools one doesn’t normally have around the house (steaming, chemicals etc).

If you have woolen baby clothes, wash them in the washing machine, using a special setting. Most modern washing machines have a built-in setting for wool. Nevertheless, if your machine doesn’t have it, keep in mind: wash wool at 40 Celsius degrees tops and centrifuge at 6-800 rotations/minute.

If possible, use the dryer as little as possible or don’t use it at all. High temperatures distort the fiber, making it harsh and out of shape, in most cases shrinking it. Don’t dry by hanging, gravity works its way and will deform the item. Because wool is the only fiber naturally curled, making it elastic and flexible, it will regain its shape. But it will take some time. So it’s best to dry on a flat surface. Also try to avoid keeping your woolens in direct sunlight. As we all know, sun makes the color fade. And speaking of color, 100% wool dyed using chemicals, doesn’t bleed.

Should I use a special detergent for wool?

If possible, yes. For some handmade items, maybe opt for handwash. Use a soft detergent, specifically made for wool. For example, [amazon_textlink asin=’B01N6GABWR’ text=’Perwoll’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’us-1′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’c885e4fe-cacb-11e8-b3a9-6bd35c6f0283′] or [amazon_textlink asin=’B0021G09I4′ text=’Eucalan’ template=’ProductLink’ store=’us-1′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’beff153a-cacb-11e8-bb1e-b54c23d0342c’] (this detergent was created specially for this fiber, as it contains lanolin, helping it mantain its natural proprieties).

If during manual washing you notice the cloth has a funny smell, like wet sheep, don’t worry, it’s perfectly normal. It proves the product was made of wool. The smell persists even if the wool was chemically dyed – been there, done that. After drying, the cloth will smell like the detergent or the product used to wash it.

Here’s a tip: for delicate knitted shawls, you can use your favorite hair conditioner. The fiber will be soft to touch, will have a wonderful color and will smell like your favorite conditioner.

How to remove stains from woolens?

This is a tricky one, but not impossible. First: never, ever use chlorine products on wool! It burns the fiber! Use a lanolin based detergent. Why? Because lanolin is naturally found in wool. And helps the fiber become water resistant for a few minutes. In case you spilled wine, for example, just use a napking to dry the moisture and absorb the liquid before the liquid infiltrates through the lanolin. Then wash the item in your washing machine or take it to a professional cleaner.

Can I iron woolen clothes?

Yes. But make sure you’re using a special setting, designed for wool. This is very important, especially for mothers who use lots of merino baby clothes. Most mothers iron the clothes, it’s another way of sterilizing the cloth and making it softer for the baby. Just as when washing, temperature for wool shouldn’t be higher than 40 Celsius degrees and use steam from a distance. If the temperature is higher, the cloth can be damaged forever.

The only thing that destroys forever any type of wool – especially merino wool – are moths. These flying pests have a great appetite for natural fibers and would stop at nothing for a quick snack. How to keep moths away from your wool? Use chemicals and keep wool in a dry closet. Don’t use lavender. Contrary to popular belief, lavender only invites moths in your closet. Been there, done that!

If you notice your wool has been attacked by moths, clean it thoroughly and put it in the refrigerator for at least 24 hours. Clean the space with chemicals that destroy moths and their larvae – it’s very important to destroy the larvae, as that is what’s eating the fiber. Add anti-moths stuff in the storage and from time to time, wash the items.
