How to join Granny Squares – Cum sa unesti patratele bunicii?

EN: It’s been a few years since I first learned how to join granny squares – if you’re looking for an easy pattern for granny squares, check this out. The first time I joined the squares with sc, which is, I suppose, the most popular and easy method. But I don’t fancy it so much, so I started searching and testing new techniques to join granny squares.

So today I’m gonna show you 3 techniques about joining granny squares. Remember: there is no right and wrong way, it’s just the my favorite way and more comfortable way. Unless a certain patterns asks for a specific joining technique in order to get a specific look of the finished project.

EN: It’s quite simple and my all time favorite. Although I’m not thrilled about hand sewing, I love this method because there are no visible edges after joining. I usually join in the back loop and always go from right to left or zig zag, but never left to right then right to left. I always sew from one direction and keep it until the end of the square.

EN: As I’ve said in the beginning of the article, this is probably the most popular method. By holding the 2 squares facing right side to you, you start in the corner, working in both loops and make 1 sc in each. You insert your hook through both squares, both loops and proceed in making a sc. It’s quite easy and logical once you begin.

You can either join the squares in series of 4, making a bigger square, or in line, vertically. Either way, once you’re intersecting and joining more squares, make sure to make 1 or 2 chains (depends on the type of square you’re working on) before proceeding to the next set of squares.

Fie lucrând doar în a doua buclă – back loop.

Merci 🙂

EN: In my opinion, joining granny squares with slip stitches works wonderful for squares made using single crochet or half double crochet. Double crochet squares are more flexible and we all know slip stiches are contracting the stitches. But I suppose this is just my opinion. You can join granny squares with slip stitches by either holding the squares with the right side facing you and both wrong sides facing each other and making a slip stitch in both loops, with 1 ch at the end of the row. Or you can make 1 sl st in each but in back loop only. See picture.

And the third way to join granny squares with sl st is by holding the squares next to each other and sl st in back loop. It’s a hassle and experience will come in handy, but the finished project looks somehow similar with the one joined by sewing (not pictured).
